Nestled in the foothills of the Maluti Mountains on the edge of the dramatic Golden Gate nature reserve in the Eastern Free State, Clarens is fast becoming the perfect place to escape to for peace, tranquility and breath-taking beauty. The Clarens Golf Estate sits quietly in a valley with spectacular scenery and is just is 2½ hours by car from both Johannesburg and Durban. The estate features a country style 18-hole golf course.
Once a SA Railways bus service maintenance shed, the property was developed into a restaurant site in 1997. Serving the local community, the bus service traveled daily between Clarens and Bethlehem. The neighboring Bibliophile bookstore was originally the bus station. The property was sold in 1999, changed into an upmarket country dining establishment and renamed Clementines. After 16 years in Johannesburg's corporate world, Shelley Tresidder opted for a better quality of life in Clarens. In August 2010 she relocated to Clarens, bought Clementines and within the first week her positive energy was already being felt in the old building. These many milestones add to the ambiance and charm of this quaint and popular restaurant in 'The Jewel of the Free State'.
The Highlander restaurant is an institution in the tiny Free State town of Clarens. Known for being unpretentious and extremely family-friendly, the promise of hearty food and a welcoming environment never goes unfulfilled. The Friday evening happy hour is the cherry on top. The the success of The Highlander Restaurant has prompted the opening of “Scotch”, the Whisky Lounge, and “Smoke”, the cigar lounge, right next to the Highlander Restaurant on the same level.
She never expected to find herself living in this particular little "dorp", but since Verne arrived a year ago from Bloemfontein, she opened a shop here, and have found the people to be as interesting and quirky as the mountains are peaceful and beautiful.
